Gunther von Hagens is a controversial figure. His art is called plastination, which is the preservation of body parts, usually for display or scientific study. His most recent exhibit is the bodies of some of the most exotic animals in the world, allowing us to peek underneath their skin and see things a little differently:

The ‘anatomical safari’ contains over 100 animals in various degrees of dissection showing von Hagen’s famed plastination process. Presented as a holistic and sculptural anatomical menagerie, the display features the most revered species in the animal kingdom: among them a long-lashed, freckled tall blondeāa giraffe; and two regal, husky, graceful, behemoth elephants. The animal revue posed immense technical challenges for Dr. von Hagens and his plastination team. This is just one of the sculptures on display at the Slavonic Birch Bark museum in Novosibirsk. Part of a show entitled “Slavonic Erotica: Grass on the Bottom of a River” (how… erotic?), these pieces show scenes, symbols and characters from old Russian folklore riddled with sexuality. Funny, filthy and kind of hot, these sculptures definitely deserve you attention, if only for their fine craftsmanship. You can check out a selection from the show over at English Russia.
Artist Joana Vasconcelos has made a chandelier out of 14,000 tampons. I’d say more about it, but what else can you really say about an needlessly large lighting fixture made out of women’s hygienic products?

"Would you mind hitting the light swi- OH MY GOD"
